NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

NUANCE Fest Fun for Everyone!

NUANCE was excited to hold their annual NUANCE Fest on October 9, 2019 and show off their brand new space in the Technological Institute. NUANCE Fest is held every year on October 9th in celebration of International Nano Day*.

The main purpose of NUANCE Fest is for new graduate students to get a look at NUANCE’s facilities ( EPIC,  KECK-II SPID NUFAB, and  BioCyro) and equipment to see whether it could be helpful in their research projects. This year approximately 150 students attended from multiple departments! Each attendee was given a “passport” to keep track of which facilities they visited and received a raffle ticket or each facility. They were also entered into a special raffle for completing their passport by visiting every facility. Additional raffles were held for pre-registrants and participation in the some onsite games, Trash Toss and “What is Crystal”.

Once participants returned to the AB 2nd Floor atrium following their tours, they partook in free pizza, cake, raffles, played games and took photos in the NUANCE Fest photo booth.

The winners of NUANCE’s annual “Art of Science Image Contest” were also announced. The contest serves as an opportunity for facility users and staff to create and enjoy the beautiful and fascinating images produced using the Center’s instruments. You can check out the winners here:  2019 Image Contest

* National Nanotechnology Day (#NationalNanoDay) is an annual celebration featuring a series of  community-led events and activities  on or around October 9 to help raise awareness of nanotechnology, how it is currently used in products that enrich our daily lives, and the challenges and opportunities it holds for the future. This date,10/9, pays homage to the nanometer scale, 10 –9  meters.
