NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

NUANCE Center Welcomes Dr. Roberto dos Reis

The NUANCE Center is pleased to welcome Dr. Roberto dos Reis as the new Scientific Officer of the VPD Group!

Dr. Roberto dos Reis is specialized in advanced characterization of a vast range of materials using transmission electron microscopy techniques. He has a bachelors degree, a master's degree, and a PhD in Physics from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, where he worked on synthesis and characterization of semiconductor thin-films. He was a long-term visiting scholar at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he worked under the supervision of Dr. Zuzanna Liliental-Weber as a member of the Electronic Materials Group from 2010 to 2013. For the past five years, Roberto worked alongside Dr. Ulrich Dahmen and Dr. Jim Ciston as a postdoctoral researcher at the NCEM facility of the Molecular Foundry of the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory, where he applied advanced electron diffraction techniques to characterize a variety of materials and collaborated with several users in a multidisciplinary environment.

His current research is focused on developing and applying experimental TEM-based methods to convey a direct relationship between properties and atomic structure by combining high spatial resolution, precision, and chemical sensitivity. Roberto enjoys good coffee, music concerts and outdoor sports.

We are all looking forward to working with Roberto and we are delighted to have him as a member of the Northwestern community!
