One-Pot Green Synthesis of Fe3O4/MoS2 0D/2D Nanocomposites and Their Application in Noninvasive Point-of-Care Glucose Diagnostics

NUANCE Center Director Professor Vinayak P. Dravid, technical staff member Yuan Li, and VPD group members Vikas Nandwana and Wenyuan Huang were involved in a recent study that reported a new method of synthesizing Fe3O4/MoS2 nanocomposites.

Over the past several years, there has been a recent spark of interest in the use of Fe3O4/MoS2 nanocomposites for biomedical and environmental applications. This interest is due to the enhanced performance and functionality of Fe3O4/MoS2 nanocomposites compared to their individual components by themselves. Despite the strong interest in their use, there exist major obstacles to the widespread application of these nanocomposites, namely the number of steps, organic solvents, and high processing temperatures and pressures that have been used in their previous syntheses.

This publication reports that Fe3O4/MoS2 nanocomposites have been obtained as a result of the exfoliation of MoS2 when it comes into contact with Fe3O4 nanoparticles in water. This method of using aqueous solvents and room temperature processing, in contrast to previously reported methods involving organic solvents and high processing temperatures, offers an easier and more ecofriendly synthesizing process.

This study made use of the EPIC and KECK facilities of the NUANCE Center. Support for NUANCE Center was given by the SHyNE Resource, the MRSEC Program, and the International Institute of Nanotechnology (IIN), as well as several other benefactors. The full publication can be read here.
