Revealing the Effects of Electrode Crystallographic Orientation on Battery Electrochemistry via the Anisotropic Lithiation and Sodiation of ReS2
Technical staff members of the NUANCE Center Qianqian Li, Yaobin Xu, Jinsong Wu, and Director Vinayak P. Dravid recently participated in a project that reported the effects of electrode crystallographic orientation on battery electrochemistry.
The project observed the sodiation and lithiation of rhenium disulfide (ReS 2 ) using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The project concluded that ReS2’s anisotropic structure causes anisotropic lithiation and sodiation along both out-of-plane and in-plane directions, and that lattice distortions are caused in ReS 2 by rhenium clusters, which in turn prompts separation and phase transformation. The results of this project could have considerable applications in the development of batteries and their storage of energy.
The NUANCE Center’s EPIC facility provided the instruments on which parts of this project were conducted. Support for the EPIC facility was given by the SHyNE Resource, the MRSEC Program, and the International Institute of Nanotechnology (IIN), as well as several other benefactors.
