NUANCE Fest 2017!
EVANSTON, IL -- NUANCE Fest, NUANCE Center’s annual open house and festival took place on NanoDay, October 9th, and was once again a huge success.
This year, NUANCE Fest included optional tours of the NUANCE Facilities, including EPIC, KECK-II, SPID, NUFAB, and BioCyro facilities. Following the tours, the Cook Hall Atrium was turned into a reception hall where participants of the fest could indulge in pizza, festival games, and snacks including cotton candy, popcorn, and sno cones all made by NUANCE staff members.
During NUANCE Fest, Prof. Vinayak Dravid announced the winners of this year’s “Art of Science Image Contest.” NUANCE’s image contest is an opportunity for facility users and staff to showcase the fascinating and beautiful images produced by the Center’s instruments. In total, the contest drew seven winners and two honorable mentions.
1st Place:
- “NiS Forest” by Graduate Student, Chenliang Xiao.
2nd Place:
- “Perovskite Butterfly” by Graduate Student, Weijun Ke.
3rd Place:
- “Twinkle, Twinkle Little MoS2” by Graduate Student, Jenn DiStefano.
Director’s Pick:
- “Accidental Beauty” by Alexandra Edelbrock
NUANCE Staff pick:
- “Crystal Gateway” by EPIC Senior Electron Microscopy and Imaging Specialist, Tirzah Abbott.
Social Media Winners:
- “Nano-Metropolis at Night” by Graduate Student, Chao Sun.
- “Magnetic Nanoflower” by Graduate Student, Vikas Nandwana.
Honorable Mentions:
- “Art of Periodicity” by Postdoctoral student, Haixin Lin.
- “The Fungal Jungle” by BioCryo Electron Microscopy Specialist, Eric Roth.
The festival closed with more games and a closing raffle for participants.
