NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

Middle School Students Visit EPIC

On Wednesday, March 1, a group of middle school students from Family Focus Community Center visited NUANCE.

Jennifer DiStefano, PhD student in the VPD group, led the young visitors through NUANCE’s EPIC facility, where they learned about the chemical makeup of mascara and were introduced to EPIC’s state-of-the-art equipment such as an optical microscope and the massive Hitachi H-8100 TEM. A few lucky students even got to try out the Hitachi S-3400N-II SEM, zooming in on a fruit fly to see tiny details of less than a micrometer!

The tours were part of a larger science field trip for the students, organized by Northwestern University's Science in Society in collaboration with the Family Focus Community Center.
