Fast and Accessible Electron Ptychography for Materials and Life Sciences

Electron ptychography combined with 4D-STEM has emerged as a transformative technique for high-resolution phase imaging, offering sub-angstrom spatial resolution and nanometer-scale depth resolution for materials, alongside highly dose-efficient contrast for biological specimens. In this talk, I will cover the fundamental capabilities of modern electron ptychography and demonstrate how to overcome its traditional computational bottlenecks. I will introduce a streamlined, open-source workflow using py4DGUI and fast-acbf to achieve near-real-time feedback via GPU-based direct ptychography. Additionally, I will showcase PtyRAD, a GPU-accelerated framework that enables 20x faster iterative reconstructions. By highlighting real-world applications across both the physical and life sciences, I hope to empower researchers to confidently apply these open-source tools and unlock the full potential of their 4D-STEM data.

Dr. Chia-Hao Lee is an Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI for Science Postdoctoral Fellow working with Prof. David Muller at Cornell University. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign under Prof. Pinshane Huang. His primary research interests center on advanced computational electron microscopy, specifically focusing on ptychography and 4D-STEM. By incorporating machine learning techniques into microscopy workflows, his research aims to enable high-resolution, high-throughput, and reliable characterization of materials at the atomic scale. |
