NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

NUANCE Center Welcomes Nanotechnology Seminar Students

On October 6, the NUANCE Center welcomed 15 students from Northwestern University’s What’s So Special About Nanomaterials? seminar for a closer look at the tools scientists use to explore the nanoscale.

Taught by Professor Katie Gesmundo, the introductory course explores what makes nanomaterials unique and how they’re used in fields ranging from medicine and electronics to catalysis and imaging. Students also discuss the potential environmental, health, safety, and ethical implications of nanotechnology.

During the visit, students toured the EPIC facility and learned about the advanced microscopy techniques researchers use to study materials at the nanoscale. The tours were led by Yu Wen of the EPIC focused ion beam (FIB) facility and Nick Gogola of the EPIC scanning electron microscopy (SEM) facility.

NUANCE has hosted this tour for several years, giving students a chance to connect what they learn in the classroom with the instruments and techniques used in nanotechnology research.

We’re glad to continue welcoming students to NUANCE and introducing them to the tools that help researchers explore the nanoscale world.
