NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

NUANCE hosts tour for multiple REU programs!

On Friday, June 27, the NUANCE Center welcomed almost 50 undergraduate researchers from Northwestern’s SynBREU and MRSEC REU programs, along with REU students from the Chicago Botanic Garden, for a guided tour of NUANCE’s multidisciplinary research facilities.

Led by EPIC Facility Core Scientists Krysten Villalon and Nick Gogola, the tour provided an overview of NUANCE’s imaging and characterization capabilities, including a live scanning electron microscope (SEM) demonstration. Students learned how researchers use these tools to investigate materials at the nanoscale and support diverse fields such as materials science, biology, and environmental studies.

Throughout the visit, Krysten and Nick fielded questions from students, offering insight into instrumentation, research workflows, and potential applications relevant to the students’ projects. The tour offered a valuable look into how core facilities like NUANCE support cutting-edge research across disciplines.
