NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

M3S 2025 Spring Meeting!

The Midwest Microscopy and Microanalysis Society (M3S) hosted its highly anticipated Spring 2025 meeting at Northwestern University’s McCormick Auditorium, on Friday, March 28th , drawing leading experts in microscopy and materials science to discuss the latest advancements in energy and quantum materials. This year’s theme, Advanced Microscopy of Energy and Quantum Materials, underscored the critical role of cutting-edge imaging techniques in developing next-generation technologies.

The collaboration between the NUANCE Center, SHyNE Resource, and the M3S Society with support from NU’s Material Research Science Engineering Center created a fantastic gathering of academics, industry professionals, and students. There were nearly 90 attendees for the research talks surrounding the topic of “Advanced Microscopy of Energy & Quantum Materials”. Invited speakers Akshay Murthy, PhD of Fermi National Lab and Yanqi (Grace) Luo, PhD from Argonne National Laboratory presented their talks Electron Microscopy: A Critical Analytical Tool for Advancing the Performance of Superconducting Qubits and Shining X-ray Light on the Complex Chemistry of Next-Generation Perovskite Solar Cells, respectively.

The line up of speakers included PhD candidates and academic professionals from the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Purdue University, as well as research scientists from Argonne National Laboratory. To complement their research on electron microscopy, new and returning vendors of instruments and related equipment gathered in the Louis room, overlooking Lake Michigan. This year included representatives from AMT, Attocube, Biolyst, Gatan AmetekHitachi, Heartland Biotech, JEOL, Oxford Instruments, Protochips, Semplor, and ThermoFisher Scientific among others. The event brought together professionals of all kinds to share tricks of the trade, advancements in technology, and connections over a shared love of microscopy.

The meeting wrapped up with closing remarks, after which an optional facility tour of the NUANCE Center provided attendees with an up-close look at the state-of-the-art microscopy equipment available to users.

Thank you so much to those who could make it and to the M3S planning committee for making this event possible. We hope to see you next year!
