NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

Magnifying Minds in Chicago!

NUANCE’s BioCryo Core Scientist, Eric Roth, was excited to visit Chicago’s Boys & Girls Club Pedersen-McCormick location on August 6, 2024 for Science and Society’s ‘Magnifying Minds’ event. Eric was with the kids while they built foldscopes and was on hand to present a kid friendly introduction to NANO and SEM.

Not only did the participants learn about life at the nano-scale, but all the different fields of research that use microscopes including forensics, geology, medicine, and more. They had wonderful questions for Eric about what it’s like to be a scientist, diverse types of microscopes, and particularly enjoyed trying to identify what the various SEM samples were!

Thank you so much to Science and Society for hosting this event and thank you to the amazing staff and volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago!
